Telford Classical Guitar Academy

Windy Point Music - Motivation, Inspiration, Education

Telford Classical Guitar Academy, directed by Andy Straw, has only recently been given this title but in reality has been in operation for about ten years. The aims of the Academy are to provide fun, stimulating, informative and musically rewarding lessons, ensemble playing opportunities and annual performances.

The Academy has it's own scheme of work which uses three tutor books written and developed by Andy Straw to cover the elementary to intermediate levels. The success of this scheme has been proven in many schools throughout Telford and Staffordshire. These books are a result of nineteen years teaching experience and make learning great fun whilst producing fantastic musical and technical progress. They have been carefully written to prepare students to enter for their first graded music exams, should they wish to do so. Beyond Grade Two level the players move on to other published material depending on their developing interests.

Academy lessons include theory, ear training and general musicianship training. Proficiency in these areas develops a more rounded musician and greatly enhances their playing success.

All students have the opportunity to enter for graded exams if they desire. Past students have had great results with ABRSM and Trinity/Guildhall examination Boards. Students will not be pressured into taking exams if they don't want to.

All Academy students will be encouraged to participate in a yearly Spring concert. These are informal concerts which are a great way to share your achievements with friends and family. It also allows everyone to see and hear what other students are playing, providing a great sense of teamwork, motivation and inspiration for all involved.

A number of students have enjoyed success in music festival competitions. Two past students (Jack Hancher and Lizzie Parkes - see testimonials) have successfully auditioned for a place at Chetham's School of Music in Manchester and are having a great time studying there. Jack has now moved on to study at the Royal College of Music.

The cost for individual lessons is £15 per half hour or longer lessons are available for advanced students.
